Overview:
Nestling against the rocky flank of an
ancient acropolis dating from the 10th century BC, Melenos Lindos is a
small luxury hotel that offers spectacular views of the Azure Aegean and
the coastline beyond. The temple above, enclosed in its medieval
fortress creates a stunning backdrop to this truly distinctive
accommodation.
Whilst paying homage to the simple Lindian village architecture, the
detail of the sandstone facades with their hand carved motifs; paved
pebble mosaics and handcrafted interiors are breathtaking. Color from
trailing Bougainvilleas, fragrance from Frangipani, Lavender and Jasmine
complete the ambience. A passion for Greek history and culture combined
with 21st century expectations of luxury and service will make your stay
at the Melenos Lindos an unforgettable experience.
The Melenos-Lindos occupies a prominent position set on terraces cut
into the flanks of the Lindos Acropolis. The ancient temple to Athena
above, enclosed in its Byzantine and Medieval fortress and a sweeping
view of the sea and the distant coastline below, create a spectacular
setting for this distinctive accommodation.
Architect Anastasia Papaioanou laid out the site and basic structure so
that the compact group of layered buildings containing the twelve rooms
and public areas branch from a central stairway. The hotel has the
appearance of a village within a village. For both aesthetic and
archaeological reasons, it was imperative for the final design of the
hotel to blend seamlessly with the historic village. Lindos has early
17th C Mansions with unique architecture, an eclectic mix of Byzantine,
Medieval, Arabic and Ottoman influences.
Using this rich heritage as a basis, artist-designer Donald Green
adapted these elements to orchestrate the highly detailed layout of the
interior and exterior spaces, to reflect this inheritance. He also
designed a range of hand-made items exclusively for the fit-out of the
hotel’s interior and terraces.
Massive retaining walls supporting terraces and the citrus garden
adjoining the complex reinforce the ancient character of the village,
and under huge medieval-style tents there is gourmet dining on the upper
terrace. Color from trailing bougainvilleas, and fragrance from
frangipani, lavender and jasmine enhance this sensuous setting. It has
taken over thirteen years for owner-operator, Michalis Melenos to
achieve his vision to create this sophisticated environment which subtly
integrates ancient history with 21st C expectations of comfort. The
numerous accolades received for the success of this collaborative design
achievement are well deserved.

About Lindos
About 45 kilometers south of the town of Rhodes is the Lindos Acropolis,
a massive fortified outcrop which dominates the landscape. It is the
site of the temple to Athena established by the Dorians more than 3000
years ago. The present village of Lindos which nestles below the
Acropolis, was once the centre of a powerful city-state. In ancient
times it was an important place of pilgrimage. Over the centuries Lindos
remained a centre of trade activity because of its two natural harbours.
Because of its strategic position between the East and the West, the
island of Rhodes attracted many invading forces. When the Ottomans took
control of Rhodes in 1523, Lindos prosperity continued. By the early
17th C the unique style of the Lindos Mansions had evolved. These
distinctive houses form the basis of the design inspiration for
Melenos-Lindos.
Distances
Melenos Lindos is situated 45 kilometers south of the town of Rhodes'
harbor and airport. Many European cities have direct flights in the
season, April to October. Alternatively there are regular flights from
Athens to Rhodes and a fast ferry service from Piraeus to Rhodes harbor.
Transport from Rhodes airport or harbor to Lindos can be by taxi or hire
car, arranged at the time of making the accommodation reservations.
Restaurant:
Our
highly qualified chefs have imagination and enthusiasm and a diverse
approach to their menus. While respecting their Greek tradition and the
aromatic influences from Asia Minor, they seek a broader balance without
limitation; always eager to try a new combination of ingredients and
flavors to widen their already impressive repertoire.
However, like all reputable chefs these days, they acknowledge that high
quality fresh raw ingredients are the essential basis to a good meal;
they understand that often only very subtle enhancement is enough to
give a dish individuality.
Accommodations:
Luxury Suites
The design of the rooms of Melenos-Lindos are inspired by the
traditional Lindos style which evolved in the 17th C. Each room has an
individual variation of the distinctive raised wooden sleeping platforms
built from elaborate hand-carved cedar. Some rooms have hand painted
ceilings and Lindian pointed arches; some have big inviting corner sofas
for lounging and reading. Every room contains a unique selection of
fabrics, ceramics and rare items from the collection of owner-operator
Michalis Melenos. Each of the immaculate ensuite bathrooms in the hotel
has a striking, Iznik style hand-painted ceramic tile panel executed in
Turkey by the artist-designer. Independently controlled air-con, IDD,
email connection, mini bar, TV, DVD library access and luxurious Frette
linen complete the inviting ensemble.
Honeymoon Suites
These three large vaulted rooms which create a special exotic and
romantic atmosphere have become known as the honeymoon suites. They
share an enclosed terrace which is set apart from most of the other
rooms. Each room has a large sleeping platform and a linked corner sofa
piled high with cushions. Elaborate cedar woodwork with ultramarine blue
glass divides the bathrooms, each distinguished with a pair of big
basins and a wet area which has a marble Haman basin, offering
alternative bathing for adventurous young lovers.
