How to Travel to the Greek Islands
First-timers often describe their trip to "the Greek Islands," as if they were one monolithic entity, easily popped into and out of and in between, like boutiques in a mall. It's only once a visitor gets to know the country that the magnitude and diversity of the archipelagos becomes clear. The truth is that there are over 200 inhabited islands in Greece—and over 6,000 isles of varying sizes all together. Of the islands with residents, each has its own character, from the whitewashed cave homes of the Cyclades to the lush, green Italianate Ionians, to the Dodecanese capped with Crusader castles.
For the most part, the islands are divided into six main island groups, plus a significant stand-alone, Crete. It's easier to travel between islands within one group than to archipelago-hop, although that can be done. (For example, if you want to go between Mykonos and Santorini in the Cyclades, there are multiple ferry and hydrofoil options in high season, but to get from Santorini to Corfu, in the Ionian, you'll need to fly or sail into Athens, then fly to Corfu.) See our handy tip sheet below to find the island(s) that sound best for your next vacation. (Read More)
Travel + Leisure: Greek Island of Paros Among the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2017
Kitesurfers have long made a playground of the breezy beaches of Paros, and no wonder: this sunshiny isle is a Cycladic triumvirate of sandy shoreline, history, and culture. Last summer the island debuted a new airport, opening it to larger aircraft and more vacationers. And the fishing village of Naousa, with its boxy white architecture and seaside tavernas, is increasingly sophisticated—check in to the modern, adults-only apartments of Porto Naousa or the elegant Seven Santa Maria, where six airy, all-white suites (and a separate villa) come with a private boat and skipper for exploring the island's secret coves. — Emily Mathieson
Lost Greek City Dating Back 2,500 Years Discovered by Archaeologists
Archaeologists have discovered a 2,500-year-old lost city in Greece.
hers from the University of Gothenburg and the University of Bournemouth have begun exploring the ruins at a village called Vlochos, around 300km (190 miles) north of Athens.
While some of the ruins were already known, they had been dismissed as part of an irrelevant settlement on a hill, the leader of the team, Robin Ronnlund, said in a statement.
He added: "A colleague and I came across the site in connection with another project last year, and we realised the great potential right away.
"The fact that nobody has ever explored the hill before is a mystery."
The team, which also includes researchers from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Karditsa, found the remains of towers, walls and city gates on the summit and slopes of the hill.
They hope to avoid excavation and use methods such as ground-penetrating radar instead, which will allow them to leave the site in the same condition as when they found it.
During their first two weeks of field work in September, they have discovered an ancient pottery and coins dating back to around 500 BC.

It comes as no surprise that the 5-star Santorini Secret Suites and Spa Hotel is chosen time after time by travelers to the island, not only for its exquisitely decorated accommodations but also for the breathtaking views guests can enjoy from their private terraces overlooking the magnificent volcanic caldera. Santorini, known for its stunning landscape and romantic ambiance, guarantees visitors a vacation that they will never forget. However, it is the world-famous volcano that sparks most people's interest due to its amazing and shocking history. Following the 1620 BC eruption, much of the one-time Santorini island was either destroyed or submerged in the Aegean Sea. As one of the largest volcanic eruptions at that time, it wiped out the Minoan civilization of the Greek islands and since 1969, when intense archaeological excavations brought to light an important Cycladic town buried beneath the volcanic ash for almost 4000 years, the spectacular discovery has spawned the legend of the sunken Atlantis. For guests staying at the Santorini Secret, it is a myth that provokes mystery and wonder as they imagine frightened people rushing to evacuate the island just before the eruption took place and struggling to carry their belongings with them. Relaxing on a spacious terrace at the Santorini Secret Suites and Spa, surrounded by steep colorful cliffs and picturesque villages, one can still see the volcano's deposits; thick layers of white pumice ash that blankets most of the surface of the island and perhaps still hiding centuries of antiquities.

In Greece — between the Peloponnese, Macedonia, and the shores of Crete — T+L finds welcoming people, seductively simple food, and unforgettable Greek wines.
I might have fallen as hard for Plyto in a tasting room or over dinner at home, but the setting of our first encounter made it inevitable. I was on a sloop, sailing past the stone bastions of Spinalonga, the mysterious Venetian fortress off Crete's northern coast. Friends I'd met just that afternoon had laid out meats and cheeses beside canapés that looked like miniature sculptures. The sea was shimmering, the sky a shade of El Greco blue.
Then came wine, from a grape variety I hadn't encountered in two decades of seeking out the stuff around the world. Not only did Plyto have historic importance—found only on Crete, it was rescued from near extinction by a determined vine grower in the 1980's—but its thirst-quenching, green-apple bite also made it the perfect beverage for a perfect moment. So whilst on board your exclusive yacht, keep your eyes open for movement in all directions so that you might just catch sight of a pod of dolphins and be part of an exhilarating experience. Most visitors to beautiful Santorini want to experience the magnificent sunsets that disappear over the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, as it is a wonderous spectacle that will remain a lasting memory of a breathtaking island vacation for years to come. Known for its glorious sunsets, Santorini has a number of excellent vantage points from which to capture the last orange rays of the sun descend below the horizon. However, as the sun slowly goes down and the sky itself becomes a canvas of spectacular colors, what better way to see this natural phenomenon than from the endless sea. Aboard a luxury Sunset Oia sailing vessel, you have the opportunity to see more than the marvellous colorful hues shine bright round the sun. From cruising the Aegean's calm waters, you will also be able to watch Santorini and its villages light up in a fascinating glow and violet haze, along with the surrounding scenery silhouetted against the sunset. A Very Special Memory from Santorini
After a four hour ferry from Athens, as fellow passengers were scrambling for cabs and drivers, we were greeted by our very own black Mercedes in which we whisked away to experience heavenly bliss of Thermes Luxury Villas. Located in Megalochori and named after the hot springs which are situated close by, the villas provided a magnificent panoramic view of not just the scintillating horizon but also from Thira and Thirassia to Akrotiri and Oia. The villa we chose had three tidy bedrooms, a relaxing private pool and a divine terrace which provided a mesmerizing view. The romance of witnessing a beautiful sunset in your bedroom is something Thermes Luxury Villas must be accredited for. A sophisticated minimalistic decor but discrete high-tech services, rock, wood, white and blue were colors that predominated the interiors and added to the traditional splendor of our villa. The next morning, a sumptuous breakfast of freshly baked croissants, Greek omelets, mimosas and espresso was served, but what made it even more delightful was the bubbling wine and the scenic brilliance of view from our own terrace. During the day we had a chance visit on the eastern side of Thermes, the hot water springs, the traditional village Pyrgos and to Prophitis Ilias, the tallest point of Santorini. The candlelight dinner thereafter, under the twinkling stars, served by our personal waiter will always be the most cherished and romantic moment ever. With their impeccable staff and generous hospitality, Thermes Luxury Villas made Santorini an incredibly dazzling experience.

Avenue of the Knights, Rhodes
An integral part of the Old Town of Rhodes, the so called Avenue of the Knights is the proper place to begin your Rhodes tour. An imposing cobblestone street the Avenue was the place of residence of the knights and it is perfectly preserved to this day. It is about 600m long on a gentle incline towards what used to be the ancient acropolis of Rhodes, and it is unusually straight for a medieval street. It could be said to be quite plain in some ways; there are doorways and windows peppering its length on both sides, and it is paved with cobbles from top to bottom. But for all its plainness it is also quite striking and indicative of a time in history in this part of Rhodes that is long since gone. It has been restored in the past, around a century ago, and as such it really doesn't look a lot different at the beginning of the 21st century than it did at the turn of the 20th century. Modern businesses and offices now take up much of the Avenue of the Knights, but you would not realize this to look at it from the exterior. It is this eerie and forbidding tone of the street that makes it a must see for anyone visiting Rhodes and the Old Town. You would be amazed at how striking it is in person and in photos, and you will definitely want to take plenty of those. Of course you have the rest of the Old Town to explore as well, and you should certainly make the effort to do so. But this is going to be just one part of your trip to the town - and walking up the Avenue of the Kings to reach it is the best way to make its acquaintance.
When you think of a Greek seaside getaway it's only natural to think of the Aegean islands. But there's a beachfront bliss to be had around the city of Athens as well. This is Vouliagmeni, the heart of the stunning Athenian Riviera, a wonderful seaside area just south of Athens. And it's home to, among others, The Margi Hotel , an 88-room property that's as clear an exemplar of the luxury-boutique genre as you're likely to find on these shores or any other. Considered to be one of the best -if not the best- boutique hotels in Athens, the Margi Hotel guarantees to offer you the perfect getaway. Located within the tranquil but nonetheless always vivid area of Vouliagmeni, it seems to have brought into existence its own exquisite microcosm: of relaxation and intrinsic luxury, which could only be appealing to those who appreciate the truly authentic hospitality. Surrounded by nature's green and caressed by the Athenian sea shore, any external discord and interference is eliminated, thus enabling guests to "treasure hunt" and identify their own precious diamonds. The Margi indeed connotes to an illusion making you automatically forget that you are in a European capital. It engulfs you within its "island" tempo, yet -at the same time- you are very close to central Athens. The sophisticated aura, the warm Mediterranean elements and the serene atmosphere join forces all over and all around, composing their own definition of what ideal hospitality is considered to be.

Little Venice is the perfect romantic escape from the little shops, boutiques, and art galleries that have filled your days on the island and provides a unique opportunity to capture "la dolce vita" of Italy while on your trip to Mykonos Greece. Upon arriving on a Crete vacation, Chania is one of the places you are most likely to see upon arriving to its shores. An atmosphere sprinkled in a touch of Florence and Venice yet filled with the culture and character of Cretan tradition, is a beautiful way to vacation in Greece. The fourteenth century Venetian Harbor, the old port, the narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants are charming and a captivating site for visitors. Here, many of its museums, churches and craft shops remain in Chania and is a place to enjoy the ease of island life resting along the shore. The harbor captivates and changes with the light of the day, making it feel new with each hour that passes. After having the opportunity to walk its narrow streets and admire its colorful old buildings showcasing the Venetian and Turkish design once spread more vastly across the island, enjoy some classic Crete tours. Filled with eclectic history, take a trip to the former Monastery of Saint Francis which has been converted into the Archaeological Museum and view a collection of Minoan and Roman artifacts. For more outdoor sightseeing, explore the waterfront and journey behind its streets until you reach the Venetian Lighthouse which overlooks the Mediterranean. For an expansion on Greece vacation packages, travel nearby to see the Venizelos Graves on a hill above Chania for a magnificent view of the Venetian harbor, sea and beyond. Surrounded by numerous options for sightseeing, be sure to travel to its mountain villages to experience "inner Crete" and hike The Samaria Gorge.

Wine Tours in Santorini
A wine education experience as unique as the grapes of the island, Santorini wine tours will be enjoyed by the novice to the most discerning connoisseur. Though the first signs of wine making can be traced to 3500 BC on the island, the volcanic explosion near 1600 BC created the terrain that gives Santorini the wine character available today. A stunning island with its unique beaches and legendary sunsets, it is the soil from this volcanic eruption that has made the island a premier producer of dry, white PDO wines made from Assyrtiko, Greece's most notable white grape. The island also produces the original "Vini di Santorini" or Vinsanto wine in which the island became famous for in ancient times. Full of flavorful notes, you will sample at least three wines at each vineyard while learning the evolution of ancient grape growing techniques to how the wine is produced today. Currently, there are an estimated 1400 hectares operational on the island, though not all can be seen during the tours of Santorini. Not a typical wine tour opportunity, you will visit these local wineries with a private guide while tasting the best wines available on any vacations to Greece. However, if you do not have time to take a wine tour, try a tour without leaving your hotel. In the epitome of luxury, the five-star Andronis Luxury Suites offers its guest's private wine tastings upon request. Leaving those who visit the island and staying at this hotel breathless while sampling selected red and white wines during an unforgettable Santorini vacation.
Summer Vacation in Crete
As the largest island in Greece, Crete offers an entire experience in one destination while on travel to Greece. From the remnants of ancient civilizations, glorious beaches, mountains, valleys and steep gorges, there is much to do during a Crete vacation. The island is divided into four regions: Chania, Rethymno, Herkalion and Lasithi. On the western side of the island, visitors will find Chania with its impressive White Mountains and National Park. The Samaria Gorge, among Crete attractions, is found there and is the biggest gorge in Greece, taking about seven hours to hike across. On the islet of Elafonissi, a beach with crystal clear waters and white sand dunes will take your breath away. Rethymo, the smallest part of Crete, is located between the White Mountains and Mt. Psiloritis. It is known for its gorgeous beaches, legendary caves, historic monasteries and traditional mountain villages. Still it has magnificent sandy beaches on the north coast (at the Cretan Sea) as well as on the south coast of the island (at the Libyan Sea). Herkalion is the largest and most densely populated part of the island and is between Mt. Psiloritis and Dikti. Drawing the most tourists, it contains archaeological treasures, picturesque villages, olive groves and vineyards. On the many available tours of Crete, visitors can explore the ancient ruins of Knossos while in the area. On the eastern most part of the island is Lasithi which contains the mythical palm tree forest of Váï,the Gulf of Mirabello, the windmills on the Plateau of Lassithi and beaches with crystalline water.
Knossos Palace, Crete
Among Crete attractions is this ancient work of architectural art, Knossos Palace. It is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site and one of the popular tours of Crete. In Greek mythology it was commissioned by King Minos to be constructed as a labyrinth to keep his son the Minotaur entrapped. It was said to be a maze built with such complexity that once inside, no one could exit. After its completion, King Minos kept the architect Daedalus prisoner to ensure he would not reveal the palace plan to anyone. However, Daedalus was also a great inventor and he built two sets of wings for him and his son Icarus to escape the labyrinth. Though filled with mythological tales best experienced on one of your private tours of Greece, the palace of Knossos was the center of administration of the entire island during Minoan times. A structure that evolved over several millennia, Knossos was inhabited for several thousand years, beginning in the seventh millennium BC and was excavated in the early 1900's by British Archaeologist Arthur Evans. Visitors can now witness the complex multi-storied buildings which covered over 65,000 feet (20,000 meters) at the height of its use. An elaborate palace, there are storage magazines, workshops, and wall paintings (frescoes) that can still be found there. Those on a Crete vacation can see the Throne room with its alabaster throne and benches to accommodate sixteen persons, the central courtyard, the theater, and the royal chambers. All painting a portrait of Knossos as a forum of elaborate rituals and extraordinary historical occurrences.

Arriving to its shores the colored strata of the volcanic rock begin a natural palette of chocolate browns and rust reds that blend into yellows, whites and creams. As you are taking tours of Santorini, you will notice the natural beauty of the island has been synced by those who inhabit it. Strolling along its old pebbled streets and under ancient arches in towns such as Fira, Imerovigli or Oia, you will behold eye-catching color schemes that strike in vivid blues, lemon yellows and sunny oranges. Sunk deep into volcanic soil, the whitewashed walls and sparkling blue domes in the sunlight have caught the eye of photographers across the world. Still, no trip to Santorini is complete without witnessing the most romantic element this island has to offer, its sunsets. Whether you are on honeymoon in Santorini or those just on vacation in Greece, all gather in the evening to take in the most romantic natural light show in the world. Mykonos by Night
Mykonos, an island known for its jet set atmosphere and beautiful beaches becomes a new island by night as its turquoise skies fade into the sun set and are replaced with moonlit waters. A popular stop for most on their Greek island vacation, this smaller island of the Aegean is alive with an energy all its own. In a mixture of sophistication and excitement, a trip to Mykonos provides the combination of beach and celebration like no other island can. By day, many are jet-skiing, parasailing or windsurfing on the Northern part of the island but by night the southern shores tend to attract more visitors as parties are centered at both Paradise and Psarou beaches. With over a million tourists every year, the south shore provides many opportunities to mingle with people from all over the world in this nightlife hub of beach bars, clubs and tavernas. When walking about its western shores, visitors can see its famous windmills aglow and "Little Venice" breathing life in the distance with its balconies overhanging the water. However, if a break from the sea is needed, farther inland is the more urban Chora (Mykonos Town) revealing many of the islands' top nightclubs with DJs spinning until day light emerges. With yachts found docked along its shores, the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Mykonos attracts many international celebrities to an island that understands what "VIP treatment" means. Showcased in the decadence and luxury of many of the hotels in Mykonos, Greece famous visitors unwind after long days and nights of enjoying all this island offers.
The Acropolis is an iconic structure and one of the largest of Athens tourist attractions. From the Greek words "acro-" (high) and "-opolis" (city) it rests majestically atop Athens and is breathtaking by night from many rooftop restaurants across the city. By day, the best way to see this historical landmark is on a walking tour of Athens after ascending this high rocky outcrop and entering Propylaea, the Acropolis' ceremonial gateway. Though it also holds Erechtheion and a temple to Athena Nike, its most well-known structure is the Parthenon which was built between 447 and 438 B.C. with its signature features of eight columns on the narrow sides and 17 on the wide sides. Looking closely at the area above the columns, two scenes are depicted: the birth of Athena and her fight with the sea god Poseidon for the name of the city. Something rarely discussed except on Athens tours, is when bending down at eye level to this massive structure, the flooring is an optical illusion. Appearing flat at one height, at another it is instead arched in shape. An architectural masterpiece, its primary purpose was to provide sacred grounds dedicated to Athena, the city's matron deity, but it has also played host to festivals and historically significant events during the peak of the city's power. Designed by Phidias, a famous sculptor, it stands in representation of a "Golden Age of Greece." More recently, it was a runner up for the New Seven Wonders of the World, making no vacation to Greece complete without witnessing this monumental site.
Mediterranean chic, the Athenian Riviera is the ultimate hot spot on where to stay in Athens with its amazing views to the Saronic Gulf and hidden luxuries. As one of the best hotels in Athens for this experience, it rests tucked away amid the Riviera and gives the opportunity to enjoy water sports, play tennis at a nearby club or tee off at the local golf course. No luxury vacation in Greece is complete without sampling nearby private beaches with smooth sand and delicate turquoise water. As one of the premiere boutique Athens hotels, the Margi's unique setting between a pine forest and pristine sandy beach overlooking a blue bay and yacht marina only adds to its allure. It provides a global experience by infusing international tastes under the ambiance of lush décor. Sip on a choice of world wines while dining on sushi and tapas all while listening to the sea lapping gently against the shore in the background. Finish off your day with a fine malt whisky and rare cigar handpicked from a private collection while lounging by the pool. An atmosphere of quiet elegance, the Athenian Riviera and Margi hotel are the perfect escape to life in Athens.
Elafonisi Beach, Crete
Located on the south-west shore of the amazing island of Crete, Elafonisi beach is definitely one of the favorite destinations for people who want to explore the pristine beaches of this island. The beach is one of the most well known beaches of Crete mainly thanks to its clear, transparent water and white and unique pink sand. It really is a rare sight; the sand is pink at most part of the beach. This has happened because millions of pinks shells with the passage of the years have been shredded and broken into tiny pieces from the waves. Right in front of this incredibly long beach you'll see a small island connected to the shore by a sandy isthmus. When the weather is fine and the wind is not blowing, it is possible to walk to the island through the shallow water. It's hard to describe the feeling you get when you finally reach the beach of Elafonisi. The crystal clear water along with the white sand will immediately catch your eye and will engrain a memory that you will not be forgetting any time soon. This marvelous piece of heaven is well worth a visit while you are enjoying your vacation in Crete.

Petros the Pelican: The Mascot of Mykonos
While enjoying a walk around Mykonos Island don't be surprised if you come across the official mascot of Mykonos, which is nothing other than a... pelican. Never before has a bird been in the limelight for the last 60 years… and this bird, without any further ado is Petros the Pelican, one of the animate attractions of Mykonos! According to the legend, it was 1954 when a fisherman found a wounded pelican and nursed him back to health and ever since, the pelican remained on the island supported by locals. Soon Petros, as named by the locals, became Mykonos' mascot for the next 30 years, until 1985 where to great disappointment by locals and tourists alike, Petros was hit by a car. Soon he was replaced by a proud successor. In the meantime, Jackie Kennedy (as she had visited Mykonos and Greece more than once) donated a female pelican named "Irini" to the island, for Petros to have companionship. Not long time ago there was an incident with another wounded pelican found in Mykonos by the locals who took care of him and nursed him back to health and they named him Nicolas and ever since, you can see three pelicans wandering around Mykonos' harbor, posing for the tourists.

The area it is known also as the "Neighborhood of the Gods" due to its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion
One of the first sites often visited by those on a tour in Athens is the famed archeological site of Cape Sounion, which is found along the coastal road, at the southeastern tip of the Attica prefecture. On this private exclusive Athens tour, you will time travel back 2,500 years to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, one of the most important sanctuaries in the Athens' region of Attica. The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion was built in the 5th century B.C. and is considered one of the major sights in all of Greece. Its construction began around 500 BC but was never completed; the temple and all the votive offerings were destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. The actual Temple of Poseidon that now stands at Sounio was built in 444 BC atop the older temple ruins. The temple was built for the worship of Poseidon the God of the Sea, and so is perfectly placed, perched above the Aegean Sea. Fifteen of its original brilliant white columns remain and have been a landmark for both ancient and modern sailors. The Temple has some friezes that depict the mythological battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs, also of the stories of Theseus - son of Poseidon. If you look closely on the south side of the temple you can see some graffiti where Lord Byron among others carved his name into the marble during his travels around Greece. Today, hundreds of visitors flock to the Temple before sunset. Watching the sunset envelop the Temple's centuries-old columns in mauve and pink shades is an unforgettable experience that will definitely weave a powerful spell over you.

The Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes
If you happen to be one of those travelers who love to explore places with a rich historic legacy, with influence on culture and with a unique architecture, then a Rhodes vacation and more especially a Rhodes tour to the island's most imposing building, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights, is definitely what you need to consider. The Palace of the Grand Master, the famous "Castello", is one of the greatest monuments erected in the Middle Ages. It was the administrative center, the residence of the leader of the Knights of St John of Rhodes, and the seat of the established ruling class. During the Ottoman period it was seriously damaged by an ammunition explosion. It was rebuilt during the time when Rhodes was under Italian occupation, around 1912. Today, it is the crowning attraction of Rhodes Town as it houses the main museum, and has an extensive array of exhibits. Visitors are able to admire not only the palace itself, but also the impressive collections of tombstones, paintings, statuary, jewelry, books and mosaics. There are also some of the most important archaeological findings of the ancient history of the eastern Mediterranean, such as the Trophy of Mithridatic Wars, the statue of Laokoon, and the mosaic of the enigmatic Medusa. The Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes is no doubt a place worth seeing.
Spinalonga Islet, Crete
Situated at the mouth of the natural port of Elounda in an area surrounded by some of the best 5 star hotels in Greece, the tiny islet of Spinalonga is the ideal destination for a day trip during your summer vacation in Crete. An arid and barren rocky islet with a strategic location, Spinalonga was fortified and served a variety of roles and purposes over the centuries. Here, on an island where lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece had been kept in isolation until 1957, a story about love and pain, separation and fear was born. Although it is small and known as the island of the outcasts, Spinalonga has a rather interesting story to tell. The island forms a natural defense "mechanism" for Elounda harbor, and in 1579 the Venetians built a mighty fortress here on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. The Venetians kept control of the island even after the rest of Crete fell to the Ottomans in 1669 and it remained under their control for almost another half a century until its capitulation in 1715. Today, thousands of tourists visit Spinalonga by boat from Ayios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka each summer as it is the most popular archaeological site in Crete after Knossos. In view of that, Travel2Greece, with a great range of Greece travel packages, provides the opportunity to visit the islet of Spinalonga through a day trip by boat from Crete. Definitely, a walk around Spinalonga –with some of the finest views of the clear blue waters that surround the island– will guide you through the pages of the novel. Strolling around the island takes about an hour, but the serenity of the place and the remnants of its recent history will certainly tempt you into spending much longer.
The Theater of Herodes Atticus
During your Greece vacations in Athens, do not neglect to visit the Theater of Herodes Atticus. This is one of the visitor hotspots, so make sure you put this in your list. Hauntingly beautiful, this ancient theater was built at the base of the Acropolis in AD 160 by the affluent Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Regilla. Known as the Irodion by Athenians, it is nestled Greek-style into the hillside, but with typically Roman arches in its three-story stage building and barrel-vaulted entrances. This semi-circular amphitheater has a wide 1,250 feet radius with a seating capacity of more than 5,000 people. The original wall of the stage stood three storeys high and was decorated with marbles and ceramic pieces while today it stands in ruins. The stage and seating area was laid with marble while it has been renovated today. It was originally roofed with cedar wood which was destroyed by fire in antiquity. Nevertheless, in the 1950s, a renovation took place helping us to visit and get a taste of this architectural treasure. Today the Theater of Herodes Atticus is one of the best places to experience a live classical theatre performance. In view of that, Travel2Greece offers you the opportunity to visit it through some of its exceptional private tours in Athens.
